TeacherRead-MaestrosLeer(TRML) combines the original TeacherRead model with important evidence-based practices aimed at promoting language and learning for children who are dual-language learners.
Why is it important?
Research describes many advantages of multilingualism, including enhanced metalinguistic awareness and cognitive processing. Interventions designed to promote the language and literacy outcomes of children who are dual-language learners before they enter kindergarten can improve the long-term academic outcomes of these children as well as realize savings in supplemental and remedial education supports. For this reason, the U.S. Department of Education and the California Department of Education have made improving the academic quality of early care and education programs a priority, especially for dual language.
AIR will evaluate TRML in Fresno and Orange Counties in California. TRML combines practices from TeacherRead with evidence-based practices to help young dual-language learners prepare for the transition into kindergarten.
We will invite early care and education programs and teachers in Fresno and Orange Counties to participate in the study during the 2023–24 and 2024–25 academic years.
